Overview

The EtherTerm 104 Workstation is a member of the ET100 family of DOS based computer workstations. It features small size, low power, Ethernet connectivity, and is ideally suited for industrial data collection applications. The ET104 workstation consists of a DOS Engine and a limited keyboard/display operator console. It can operate as either a stand alone computer or as a network client within the limits of the operator console.  The ET104 Ethernet Workstation is available in either the tabletop or wall-mount configuration and has an eight line by 40 char. per line alphanumeric display with a 24-position numeric keypad.

Network Operation

The ET104 would typically serve as a "DOS Client" to either a Novell or WIN-NT server on your local area network which can support 10BaseT Ethernet. In such capacity, the ET104 can run software applications residing on the ET104’s flash disk or on the file server. This allows for the utilization of resources on the file server as well as other resources available on the LAN and beyond (print server, Internet gateway, etc). The ET104, when powered up, will automatically boot up ROM-resident DOS and if it is able to locate an "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file on the flash disk it will execute the .BAT file, which would include the Ethernet protocol initialization plus the execution of an application program stored either on local flash disk or on the file server. This program operates as the standard data collection program provided with the ET104 or it can be a custom program developed by your VAR representative, or yourself. This program will typically collect data key-entered by the operator or data scanned from bar codes or badge swipes, or by other input means which are optionally available for the ET104. The collected data can be stored locally in a flash disk file or it can be immediately written a record at-a-time to a file on the server. A typical data collection program can prompt the operator on the two-line display in full alphanumeric text, and then retrieve data from a number of input sources. With optional licensed software modules, the ET104 can also be setup to be a "server" to the network and thereby allow other clients to have access to its data files, etc. To establish a network connection, protocol stacks are available for Novell NetWare (IPX protocol), or for Microsoft Windows NT (IPX or TCP/IP protocol).

Stand-alone Operation

The ET104 can serve as a stand-alone DOS based computer within the constraints of its abbreviated resources to provide an industry standard software run-time platform in a compact formfactor. Local resources such as the on-board flash disk can be used to store application related program and data files. The included RS232 serial port can be used to interface to local equipment such as a scale, gauge, or printer.

Barcode Input

The barcode decoder input option allows one or two bar-code devices to be attached on the ET104 workstation. Decoded input is treated just like keyboard entered data and can be configured to include an automatic Enter (<CR>) code. The ET104 will automatically discriminate and decode Code 39, Code 128, Interleave 2/5, Codabar, and UPC/EAN symbologies. Available input devices include wands, slot readers, and wand emulating CCD or laser scanners. The Wall Mount version of the ET104 can be supplied with an integral slot reader as one of the bar-code input devices.

Magstripe Input

The magstripe decoder input option allows either a single or dual track magnetic card reader to be attached. Either single Track #1 or Track #2 reader can be decoded and the input is treated just like keyboard entered data. If a dual track reader is installed Track #1 will be decoded first and if it fails Track #2 will be decoded.

Touch Memory Input

The touch memory input option provides a receptacle for reading the touch memory (e.g. DS199x) devices. These devices are semiconductor memory chips provided in a small, hermetically sealed metal can and are used in harsh environments where magstripe cards or bar-code badges are not acceptable media. Decoded input is converted to ASCII equivalent character codes and is treated just like keyboard entered data.

Relay output

The ET104 can be supplied with either two (dual) or four (quad) output relays that can be individually activated under software control. Each relay has a single "form A" contact rated at 10va (100vdc, 100ma.) maximum. Access to the contacts is via screw terminal blocks on the back of the unit.

Power Supply

The ET104 is powered by a 12vdc (12va rating) power adapter that plugs directly into a 120vac receptacle. Typical power consumption is less than 16 watts. Optional input devices (laser scanners, card readers, etc.) can increase the power consumption slightly. Alternate power supplies can be used by connecting them via the ET104 power jack.
